Big Damn Pimpin'!

Once upon a time, way back in the fall of 1993, kagey started her freshman year of college a funny little upstart network known as FOX aired a funny little show known as The X-Files on Friday nights at 9pm.
But at 8pm, they aired an even funnier little show known as The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.
Starring Bruce Campbell, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. was a Western with scifi elements, a mix of comedy and drama; therefore it was of course doomed, and became, if memory serves, the very first casualty of the Fox Friday Night Time Slot of Doom.
Bastards.
TNT then showed ABCJr in syndication for a while, but it's been off the air for a few years now.
Over at tvshowsondvd.com, ABCJr is the third most popular unreleased show (after BH 90210 and JAG), and rumor has it that the show may be released on DVD in 2006. Yay!
ABCJr ran for 27 episodes, including the 2-hour pilot. Brisco County Sr. (R. Lee Ermey, aka "the drill instructor from Full Metal Jacket"), the greatest lawman the West has ever seen, is shot to death by the infamous John Bly (Billy Drago) and his band of twelve outlaws as they make their escape, aided by Pete Hutter (John Pyper-Ferguson of approximately half a billion fannish Canadian shows/movies, including Hard Core Logo, in a recurring role. I swear he recurs).
A group of robber barons known as the Westerfield Club hires Brisco County Jr., his son, a Harvard-educated lawyer turned bounty hunter, to round up Bly and his gang.
There's a horse who forgets he's not a human, an occasionally-reappearing-as-a-ghost father, a wacky inventor played by John Astin (aka, Gomez Addams!), a theme song that got snurched by both Major League Baseball and the Olympics, and more guest stars with whom to play "hey, I know that dude" than you can shake a stick at.
Give it a shot. You know you want to. *g*

Feel free to spread the fileslike a virus far and wide, but please don't post the links out in public and get me in trouble, thank you kindly.
For those of you who get hooked, there will be more, um, pimpage happening under friendslock, so if I don't have you friended and you want into the filter, just drop me a note. (I say "filter" as if I'd actually exclude anyone on my flist. Ha! No, you're all doomed.)
And just so no one's under any false impressions, I'm not doing this out of the goodness of my heart. I want y'all to go to tvshowsondvd.com and vote for the show, so I can get my DVDs. *g*
Also, I signed up for the series at
fanfic100, because I'm utterly and completely mad. And I have a beautiful daydream that maybe more than three people might actually read what I write for it. *bg*
(Asking to be in on the filter or downloading the... pimpage... in no way, shape or form constitutes a commitment to read anything I write, just so we're clear. Actually, I just want y'all to start writing fanfic, too, so I'm not all alone in my little padded corner. Otherwise, I can just make up any damn fanon I want to, and there's so little other ABCJr fic out there that no one can refute me. Do you really want me to be drunk with that kind of power? I didn't think so.)

Date: 2005-10-19 04:23 am (UTC)LOL! Oh, god, it's sad but true. It's not a tiny fandom, it's a nonexistent fandom, and why? There are much bigger fandoms for shorter, worse shows!
I kept trying to talk myself out of it, and failed. "You're signing up to write for a fandom that doesn't exist. Are you crazy?"

Date: 2005-10-19 03:31 am (UTC)1993? Really? Ye gods. I got married that year and had 13 years in service by then... I feel so old and decrepit now.
I remember watching the show, I don't recall if I liked it or not. Moot point, as it was quickly cancelled.
You can buy DVD-Rs of the show now, for $99. Gah! And I actually found some fanfic... Please, write something so I don't need the spork!

Date: 2005-10-19 04:36 am (UTC)You're not old or decrepit! And, hey, I got married in 1999. I actually met The Boy in 1993.
I saw those $99 DVRs. Dude, I don't pay $99 for actual DVD sets. Well, okay, but only for, like, the Monty Python 16-DVD boxed set. But that's like $6/disk.
I'm working on the fic! I'm just... slow. And still writing SGA in the meantime. *g*

Also, I've just been watching the pilot and wow, Brisco and Sheppard could be brothers. Seriously, in the right light ;-)
//watches teh pretty and has more geekgasms over shiny western//

Date: 2005-10-19 03:05 pm (UTC)Poor, poor John Pyper-Ferguson. Every time he comes on our TV (no matter what kind of role) somebody yells "Nobody touches Pete's Piece!" Because we are huge, huge dorks. And really not as embarrassed about it as we should be. *g*

Date: 2005-10-19 06:31 pm (UTC)I watched The Crow: Stairway to Heaven just for John Pyper-Ferguson, because I loved Pete just that much. And Spike showed the TNG ep "A Fistful of Datas" a few weeks ago, and I watched it because TiVo reminded me that he was in it. And I was all, "OMG! It's the Ur-Pete!"
So I heart your dorkiness. *g*

Date: 2005-10-20 12:49 am (UTC)Oh, I hope the DVDs come out. That would be too cool. I remember when was on the air--just hearing the theme song would put me in a better mood. Actually, it still does. (Weird random fact: it's by the same guy who did the MacGyver theme.)

You know, seeing this, it struck me that if you replace "horse" with "half-wolf," and combine it with the "son out to bring the killers of his legendary lawman father to justice" premise, it sounds a little like this other show I know...
Please add me to the filter?
