kageygirl: (mckay screwed)

Ophelia, you standoffish, landfall-avoiding, attention-seeking whore of a weather system, you are fucking with my plans to enjoy raucous piratey goodness this weekend. Disperse and be done with you, you vainglorious bitch.

Ahem.

Other things I suspect I will not be attending in the vicinity of Boston include Terry Pratchett reading in Harvard Square and the guys who write the webcomic Penny Arcade talking at MIT, both happening tonight.

Also, I did not realize that Tom Hanks had an IMAX movie called Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon coming out next Friday, presumably to coincide with the release of the From the Earth to the Moon: Signature Edition due out next Tuesday, whose existence I only know about because of the giant display in Best Buy trying to pimp the free-with-purchase-of DVD of the first episode of Rome to me.

While investigating these matters, I learned other things I did not know about, being that IMAX films about both Antarctica and fighter pilots are playing at the Museum of Science. I did at least know about the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination world premiere exhibit opening October 27, and the Wright Lectures on Cosmic Evolution, but probably only because of my membership in the MoS.

I also remembered that I've never seen even part of The Right Stuff, which is, for me, odd to the point of buhness, and must be rectified with all appropriate speed.

I'm failing so miserably at being me that I expect the coach to pull me at any second and send in the back-up me. With any luck, she'll be able to finish the Worst-Case Scenario fic I almost completely forgot about, salvage the [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic thing that I've done strange and unnatural things to, and maybe even do both without the horribly lame jokes I seem to be making today. Not to mention everything else I've been letting slide.

In happier news, first-string The Boy seems to have recovered from last week's near-divorceworthy stumble, and has also gotten himself promoted at work! So there's a silver lining to the solid cloud cover blanketing the city and this team...

Congrats to The Boy.

And I'm enjoying your bad jokes.

I'm so proud of him! He's got--exactly the same job title! But now he's one grade higher. I think it's like going from first- to second-level black belt.

They're not even enjoyably lame. They just lay there, like sacks of... lumpy inanimate objects.

I think my replacement is warming up over there. I hope so, because I'm just walking 'em all and loading the bases...

*sits down beside chelle to wait for more horribly lame jokes*

now I'm thinking of Fozzie's Jokes on Demand from the Muppet Show last night. wokka wokka.

"Right Stuff" is awesome. Amazing film, gorgeous cinematography. Especially since it's over a quarter-century old and the special effects don't generally look at all dated. Plus, Sam Shepard, a very young Dennis Quaid & Ed Harris. Yum.

You've seen the "They Fight Crime!" random generator thingie, right?

I think it plots better than I do.

I swear, it's an offense against woman and nature that I've never seen "The Right Stuff." Ed Harris and Scott Glenn are two of my favoritest actores ever, and Dennis Quaid and Lance Henriksen are sentimental favorites, and that's not even getting into the whole astronaut thing. It's just crazy.

Ohhhhh! My dad was a fighter pilot, so I've seen the fighter pilot IMAX film. It's one of the things we went and did together before I moved.

It's pretty cool, even if Dad did say they had to change a lot to make it fit for public consumption. There are all kinds of regulations governing how accurately the military's portrayed in film, and the truth is they skew it away from accuracy a lot.

You know, that way Joe Blow couldn't have a movie night and find out just how and where to target them. Or something like that.

Yeah, I'm not surprised they do that--it only makes sense not to be quite that dumb. *g*

I remember going on a school trip to DC, where we watched the Senate in session, and they told us they only filmed the chamber from two specific camera angles, one assumes for much the same reason. Better not to give anyone a "place bomb here!" diagram. *g*

Can I point [livejournal.com profile] irishaithne this way? She's a recent returnee to the Boston area (grad school) and would probably be interested in some of these events. If not, I'll take the non-lazy routes and track down the links and send it to her that way.

No way! Promoted? (See, I can somehow believe a near-divorceworthy stumble, but the promotion is somehow...I don't know...harder to grasp...and I think he's smart and wonderful!)

Congrats to The Boy!

flashfic? Are you romance-ing? Do tell!
