I'd managed to forget it was today, but Helyn Highwater on the EntSTSlash list reminded me.

So: total squee!fic, in honor of [livejournal.com profile] maching_monkey. Without whom I'd be rambling, incoherent, and opaque--on a good day. *g* Thanks for all the sins you keep me from committing, darlin'.

"Your numbers are off."

Rodney started at the voice by his ear. He turned his head to see Sheppard straightening up, hands clasped behind his back, apparently having been leaning over his shoulder. He narrowed his eyes at the major's innocent expression. "Don't you have anything better to do than sneak up on people who are actually trying to get some work done? Why don't you find yourself a hobby?"

"This is my hobby." Sheppard bounced on his toes once, looking far too pleased with himself.

"Oh, how lucky for me." Rodney suppressed a sigh and turned back to his laptop. "Now that your work here is done, Major, why don't you find someone else to practice your hobby on? Carson, maybe? I'm sure he'd in no way retaliate during your next physical."

"He doesn't jump quite as high as you do."

"I did not jump."

"You almost fell out of your chair."

Rodney glared at Sheppard. "You startled me. I startled. It's a basic animal instinct to react to something looming over you."

Sheppard bounced on his toes again. "Looming. I don't think I've ever been accused of that before."

"Glad to be of service."

"Speaking of being of service..." Rodney rolled his eyes and sighed in resignation, but Sheppard held up his hands. "Your numbers really are off. I know we've got that big power consumption meeting this afternoon. Thought you should know ahead of time."

"What are you talking about?"

"Here." Sheppard leaned in to point at the window where the data stream from the city's computer system was displayed. "I think you just transposed those two Ancient symbols, there and there."

Rodney blinked at the screen. "You're right."

"I know."

"That would make this whole sequence... horribly wrong."

"You're welcome."

Rodney scrolled back through the figures. "It's a consistent error--there must be a glitch in the translation program."

"Looks like."

Rodney frowned down at the recalcitrant numbers, the problem clear as day. "When did you learn how to read Ancient numerals?" That came out more snidely than it should have, but Rodney hated feeling like an idiot.

Sheppard ignored Rodney's resentfulness--for which Rodney was grateful, since he wasn't really upset with the major. "Grodin gave me a crash course. Piloting the Jumper is a little easier if I can read the console."

"Of course." Rodney pulled up the code for the translation program, then glanced at Sheppard as a thought occurred to him. "Wait--did you just see this now?"

Sheppard fidgeted with a loose wire, not looking at Rodney. "I looked over the reports last night."

"You--really?"

Sheppard shrugged. "I hit a boring part in my book."

"So you..." Sheppard seemed fascinated with the floor all of a sudden, and Rodney shook his head, getting himself back on track. "I can't believe I didn't see this."

Sheppard stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked up at Rodney. "Probably just too close to it. Plus, we've been a little busy lately."

"I need to run these again."

Sheppard tilted his head and backed away, as if to distance himself from the tedious part. "I'll be going now."

"Major?" Sheppard stopped in the doorway, and Rodney took a deep breath. He still felt foolish, but at least he had time to fix the reports. Sheppard really had done him a favor. "Thank you."

Sheppard gave him a self-deprecating smile, raising his eyebrows. "Hey, I just don't want my favorite scientist to look bad in front of everyone." And then he was gone.

Rodney stared hard at the doorway, then slowly turned back to his laptop. He was probably grinning like an idiot now, but that somehow seemed much less embarrassing.

Awww, sweet! I really liked this, Kagey--eagle-eyed Sheppard, and astounded Rodney. *g* Such woobies. So in love, even if they don't know it yet.

Thanks, Grrrl!

Such woobies. So in love, even if they don't know it yet.

So, so true. But we know, and we'll just have to fill in the gaps until they figure it out.

LMAO.

I loved this! It could've been a snippet from the show, other than John's little confession of his adoration of Rodney there at the end ;)

I have nothing to offer our belovedest Monkey today. Shame on me.

Don't worry about that, Miera! Hell, as I just mentioned below, I didn't even think about doing anything for today at all, and God knows how grateful I am to my betas all the time.

I'm just happy to help, and get sneak peeks at all the terrific fic!

I do. I do so very, very much. And God knows I didn't even think about it being Beta Appreciation day at all...

This was marvellous. I want you to post it on Wraithbait. I think everyone should read it. It's fabulous.

That line about Carson was my favourite, too. LMAO indeed.

How perfect is it that Shep went out of his way to make sure the report was all right? For McKay? They are such woobies. God, I love it.

You rock. You just rock. Thank you.
