... putting frelling adware/spyware/malware on my frelling hard drive. It's taken me the installation of:

Windows Critical Service Updates
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Spyware Doctor
Registry Mechanic
CWS Shredder
HijackThis,

at least 17 reboots (3 of them in safe mode), the deletion of edonkey2000 (never, NEVER install this), the manual deletion of certain line items from my registry, and 2.5 days to get my bloody laptop back into working order.

All this, and I haven't even installed Service Pack 2 yet. I may give myself a cooling-off period of a day or two before I do that, lest it screw something up and force me to throw my baby here through the sliding-glass door and off our seventh-floor balcony.

Hi, my name is kagey and I have anger issues. *g* But at least I know my limits.

i also have winpatrol & zone alarm (free edition) & spybot, in addition to ad-aware & norton antivirus & avg antivirus (always good to ahve 2, cuz sometimes.....)...

hubby calls my combo "fort knox" and pronounces it "good" ;)

it's not a safe computing world out there, s/he who goes unarmed into the fray ends up combobulated to the max! many souls brave & stalwart have crumpled under the pressure and done a full format C: \u followed by a full OS reinstall & program reinstall....
the truly brave (and slightly insane) will attempt the more arduous discombobulation that you have victoriously emerged, relatively unscathed, from doing battle against, and end up, unfortunately, doing the aforementioned format C: \u etc, manoeuvre anyway...
then there are us, those who live in a perpetual state of fort-knox-dom... we are identifiable by our flannel nighties/jammies that require swiss army knives for our partners to remove (if they ever want to see nekkid flesh again), and our computers ask us a plethora of permission queries upon the insstallation of ANY piece of software, and we have learned that telling something 'yes' 5 times per installation is NOTHING compared w/ the head-desk-ing of the removal of one piece of spyware/malware/adware software... many of us would be mac/linux puppies if only the mandatory software requirements of our spouce/children/etc., could be met by those OS, but are entrapped (enslavement of the masses) by windows unto the death of our braincells...
to you, the brave warrior on this path, i send strength, and a stalwart cup of coffee (fortification by bailey's NOT optional). to you, i also offer this warning... prayer, HANDS ON, before the commencement of the win xp2 service pack is an ADVISED manoeuvre. we, in this household, performed such upon ours, and were blessed by only a few reboots (none in safemode) and only a few hours of torturous terrified wonderment of "will it work w/ the service pack" as we tested all software afterwards. our housemate, who's SO is of the unbelieving kind (in anything!) did not advise this manoeuvre to her when her computer partook of the service pack, and we've been trying to unravel the mysterious gremlins since!

bb - obviously on the GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD drugs right now... tongue in cheek :)

Oh, there will indeed be drinking, and the sacrificing of small household objects, and the backing up of everything remotely crucial before I touch the service pack. And I will probably have pie on hand in case of emergency. *g*
