This is lovely. I especially like the line: In a disturbing moment of sentimental metaphoric projection, it occurs to Rodney that one of them might well be orbiting the other. It's a beautiful metaphor that I absolutely was not expecting, and it's also perfectly in Rodney's voice. This makes me happy.
